Definition

The geometric shape of washers is a cylindrical shape. The radius of the outer diametre is significantly larger than the thickness of the washer. Washers having a wall thickness which is many times thinner than the center hole are in general referred to as a ring. However, there is no clear definition in view of the different terms such as cylinder, washer, plate, ring or similar descriptions and is mostly depending on the context.

Various types of washers are available:

  • plain washers without hole
  • Washers with holes: concentrical (center) holes or coaxial (offset) holes
  • Washers are mainly used in fastening technology

Production methods:
Washers can be manufactured in different ways:

  • Machining
  • Stamping
  • Laser cutting
  • Water jet cutting

Definition

As a machine element a bolt is a short cylindrical fastener.
Unlike a pin a bolt can be dismantled easily, i.e. used with clearance fit. It is mainly applied for cases with transverse loadings (shear). It’s additional shape elements such as head, transverse hole (for splints), short thread (for nuts) or crosswise slot (for axle support) help avoiding a loss through form closure between the bolt and the parts to be connected with.

Bolts are often used instead of screws for connections which need to be unfastened quickly and frequently for example in the transportation sector for the fixing of containers, for the closing of loading platforms of trucks or similar.

Bolt connections are basically rotatable and can therefore be part of a swivel joint, f.ex. Bolts are standardised according to EN 22340 (without head) and EN 22341 (with head) and additionally in Germany acc. to DIN 1445 (with head and threaded end).

Bushings & Sleeves

Definition

Bushings and sleeves are often used in the fastening technology.

A distance bushing, a distance sleeve or a distance tube is always used when it is necessary to create a distance (space) between two components or in order to fill a certain space. It will be referred to a distance sleeve, distance tube or small tube for parts with tubular shape.

Bushings, sleeves can be manufactured in different ways:

  • Machining
